Replacing More Than 10 Hours of Passive Video
The initial plan was to generate a separate video for each patent—more than 10 hours of linear content with no way for visitors to explore. The challenge was to make thousands of complex records understandable, engaging and useful on a public-facing office installation.
The Creative Solution
A Self-Directed Patent Innovation Wall
I proposed and designed an interactive alternative that turns OpenText’s patent history into an explorable product. Visitors can search patents, inventors and keywords; filter by country, year and topic; and move between Grid, Timeline, Cloud and Globe views. The experience makes a large technical dataset feel immediate and human.
The Execution
From Data Problem to Working Product
I led the concept, information design and AI-assisted development of the experience:
Information Architecture & UX: Structured 3,465 patents, 2,716 inventors and 16 countries into a clear search-and-filter experience built for quick exploration.
Data Visualization & Interaction: Designed four complementary views—Grid, Timeline, Cloud and Globe—so visitors could understand the collection from different perspectives.
AI-Assisted Product Development: Used an AI-supported coding workflow to turn the concept into a functional screen-based experience, then iterated on navigation, visual hierarchy and usability.
The Outcome
An Award-Recognized Interactive Alternative
The final Patent Innovation Wall replaced passive playback with self-directed discovery and created a reusable way to communicate OpenText’s history of invention. The approach received OpenText Innovate recognition for reimagining a complex, data-driven animation as an interactive experience.
